A little while ago I asked my Instagram followers what health issue they struggle with the most. I received everything from acne, weight loss, emotional eating, sleep, stress, anxiety, fatigue, headaches, and digestion. You might think, “holy crap how does one address all of those different issues?” My answer would be through diet. So many of the common health issues that women are experiencing today are due to a diet lacking in nutrients or a diet that is inflammatory to their body.
While I cannot tell you personally what specifically you should be eating because every human is different (and I am not your doctor), I can tell you what has worked well for some of the people that I have worked with. With my Integrative Nutrition Health Coach certification I can support individuals and groups of people in making nutritional and lifestyle changes to improve their health.
Let’s just address the fact that the food pyramid is old news. Your diet should not be filled with complex carbohydrates that are white, fluffy, and sugary if you want to feel your best. Your diet should be filled with foods that contain vitamins, minerals, and nutrients that fuel you throughout your days. You’re not going to get that from white rice and whole wheat bread.
A simple rule I like to abide by is to eat more food that you can get from your farmer. If you see a package of granola or a protein bar that says “low-fat” or “all natural” or “organic”, that is all fine, but it is definitely not something your famer could grow therefore I would skip it.
With that in mind, here are my guidelines:
· Avoid Inflammatory Foods: grains, dairy, soy, legumes, added sugars, and seed oils
· Include Anti-Inflammatory Foods: high quality meat, seafood, vegetables, fruits, nuts, and healthy fats
Everyone is hearing about how important gut health is today. Gut health is important for a variety of reasons including supporting healthy digestion, mood, mental health, preventing brain fog, increasing energy, etc. Many people connect gut issues strictly to digestive problems, but there is more and more research showing that anxiety and depression are directly related to gut health. Sarah Wilson (NYT best seller), states that “anxiety and depression are not caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain, but by an imbalance in the gut and microbiome.”
Food plays a huge role in the regulation of the body and when you are not fueling your body with the right foods, many of the systems in your body will not work well. Going from an inflammatory diet to an anti-inflammatory diet allows you to see that food is directly related to how you are feeling. These small changes open your mind and give you the CHOICE to either go back to the way you were eating or continue on this path to wellness.
Imagine a world where you have enough energy to easily get through the entire work day AND a workout after work. Imagine a world where the small things don’t anger you. Imagine a world where you feel fully comfortable in your body and the things it is capable of. That is my goal for the clients I see and I am here every step of the way to help you achieve that.
The way you eat is the way you live. If you eat well, you live well.
